Cement Producer
Challenges
Our customer is the Colombian cement market leader and also the sixth largest concrete supplier in the US. The company has a $3.5 billion USD market capitalization and $2 billion USD yearly revenue, coming mostly from the US and Colombia operations.
Before 2005, the company was divided into 9 different companies each with its own administrative and telecom infrastructure. The year that corporate management decided to merge all the companies into one bigger corporation, they also looked for efficiencies on many fronts. The merging of telecom infrastructures involved the integration of different brands of equipment, diverse telecom technologies and a plethora of service providers.
Corporate management wanted to have a system to centralize the monitoring and management of these telecom assets as well as the forthcoming integration of them into one global unified telecom network
Solution
In 2006, the company contracted Xpensert TEM to consolidate the telecom information in a centralized system. Management decided to implement the capture and collection of call details in three phases aligned with the deployment of Voice Over IP (VoIP) equipment. Xpensert’s capture modules were deployed in each of the regional offices and started to collect raw call data.
In 2007, 14 sites were already managed with the Xpensert solution providing valuable telecom traffic and cost information to help the company decide what service provider mix was the most cost effective. By the start of 2008, 20 sites were already managed and the company had designed special custom telecom cost reports that are still distributed to the management of each division every month.
Custom reports are further analyzed every month to discover potential cost saving opportunities: each head of division has access to the reports in their email inboxes and also on the web interface when needed.
Benefits
The company was able to select a cost effective mix of telecom providers in the different regions and continues to monitor and negotiate telecom rates based on the ongoing analysis of their telecom usage patterns.
The ability to automatically distribute reports to the managers in each division has put the information in the right hands to help in deciding what is best for each business unit in terms of services, circuits and providers whilst enabling the managers to monitor and enforce telecom usage policies.
Key Technologies
Being able to collect, rate and analyze calls from diverse telecom equipments was a key driver for the success of this implementation. Once the telecom network was unified, the ability to charge specific rates per originating extension, trunk and service used, became a cornerstone for the process of charging back each individual.
The automatic distribution of reports in predefined schedules allows the company to review nearly 100 reports every month without the hassle for IT. The technology used for this purpose ensures the company timely information even when they decide to include more and more sites and production plants to the system. It usually takes a couple of days to get new sites included in the system without disrupting the ongoing operation.
